Today I'm talking with Ricardo Vargas, Chair of the PMI Board of Directors and the manager of an $18 billion portfolio for Sonangol, an oil and gas company in Angola. Ricardo has worked around the world and sees huge opportunity for project managers who are willing to focus on risk management, be flexible and offer creative solutions that promote innovations for their companies. He is convinced that a disciplined approach to project management will emerge as a key driver for change and that executives will begin to identify project management as indispensable for business results.

I strongly agree with all this great discussion and specially with the focus to risk management and the opportunity to influence in business decisions. PM is the only way to move companies to better positions in the market and this is based in how we can help to take good decisions.
In this difficult economy period, this is one of the most important thinks. This is a big opportunity for al project managers.
Enjoyed listening to the overall discussion especially from the international perspective. It is encouraging to hear others comments that mirror generally my personal thoughts. I have focused on risk management and flexibility at my workplace primarily as a function of the range of project sizes from 2 million to 600 million dollars. I would very much appreciate a discussion on manueverability in the PM field. I am currently a PM at a state highway department due to creative thinking they have accepted non-engineers into this field. However, I am constantly faced with the condition of being a technical expert first - then being a PM. I am anticipating leaving my current employer and would like to get established in other fields how would you recommend doing that? Discussion topic? Thank you
I like the video blog idea, and this was a great article and perpective of things to come.
Ricardo Vargas has commented the right 5 steps to lead this time. Risk management, opportunity to us all PMP, perspective to future gallons, think out of the box and show your skills to the Board!. Congratulations to Gregory Balestrero, our President and CEO of the Project Management Institute to this interview with him.
Hello, I 'd like to add me comments , as we all know that the world faces a big economy crisis and of course such as this problem effective badly for the budget of any project whatever the project purpose , so in my perspective all the project managers should increase their management skills for how to innovate or create the best way to achieve the projects with less recourses and budget as well, and don’t let these issues effects badly on time delivery and quality of the project , it is a hard challenge , the skill of the crisis management should appear nowadays because the world in a crisis, and also in my perspective when the crisis increases the project management professional demand increases too, this is my first comments thank you very much for that opportunity.
Very good discussion, rightly needed at this difficult juction and is really encouraging us.
This is fantastic.
I completely agree with Ricardo that this can be a time of opportunity for project managers, since project management is, in essence, to get the optimum resources to do the task and, in these times when resources are more scarce, there are huge opportunities for those who know how to get the best resources for the minimum cost.
Congratulations for this excellent innovative way of communicate to project manager’s community.
I hope to hear and see you both again in this “video blog”.
Best Regards,
José Ângelo Pinto
As a Brazilian citizen and a project management I strongly agree with Ricardo Vargas perspective! In a world where we must produce more results with less cost, project management with focus in risk management is a valuable option to take the right decisions. There are no more space to drive projects without a solid foundation in process, management skills and tools and techniques.
